Gymkhana and Football started up today. Here's a couple of best friends relaxing after competing earlier in the evening.

It was a magic moment. I arrived at the river with two very pretty girls for a photo session. This is the first thing I saw as I got out of the car. I've seen these river horses before, kayaking down the river. This was the first shot of the session. This is what the Red Mountain Brumby cycling club is named after - these magnificent horses.

Still archiving and spotted this one below. This rider just brushed the pole. Apparently it's OK to catch it and stand it back up as you ride past, if you can. She makes it seem so easy.

Martin Howey - the Audie Murphy of cycling

I've been after Martin for some time to come in to the studio with all his cycling medals. He is the most highly decorated cyclist probably in all cycling. He's a modest man and wouldn't say anything about all these medals. I happened to spot them in a pile in his office after he'd moved in to his new house and before he could hide them away. You can see his state champion jersey here and the yellow one below is the Overall Champion jersey from the Huntsman Senior Games. I think he has several of them.

The Kids of Summer

Capture your kids this summer, the suntans, the smiles, the winning personality. Before you know it, they'll be off to college (trust me, I know). Preserve the memories!

I'm scheduling free studio photo sessions to photograph your children this summer. You can purchase 13x19 inch ultraboard direct prints (like a very nice mounted poster). These mounted posters have a museum mount affixed to the back which enables you to very easily and simply mount the print directly to your wall. No custom frames are required to wall-mount these plus-size prints.

Here's how it works. You schedule a session for your children at my home studio. There is no charge for the session. Bring the kids in their bathing suits, or their summer attire. Bring your props or use mine. We'll have a short session (about 15 minutes per child) getting several poses. After the session, I'll put your proofs on my web server where you can make your selection. Order large 13x19 inch prints as described above. I'll edit the images (using some of my secret sauce) and add the child's name (or text of your choice) to the bottom of the image and send it off to the lab for printing. I use a local lab, so I get the prints back very quickly.

Prices:

13x19 inch, ultraboard direct print, museum mount, single image and text - $45
13x19 inch, ultraboard direct print, museum mount, 3-image composite and text - $55

Contact me with your questions or to schedule your studio session. As you can see, I've photographed children as young as 7 months for this project (nice if they can sit up themselves) up to pre-teen. I'm thinking children, but will be happy to photograph any and all your children this summer.

Gene Martin - Happy Birthday

I was invited to attend the birthday party of a friend of mine. He was turning 90. He was surrounded with his family and seemed to be having the time of his life. Here are a few snapshots; click the thumbnail to enlarge the images.

Sharing stories with the family. Great-grandson looks on in admiration.

Here's Gene singing one of several songs he amused the family with. He has a pretty good voice. He even expressed fear that now that he's sung in public, that the church choir would probably be coming after him.

Here's the family. It's my understanding that everyone if the family was able to make it to Queen Creek for the celebration.

I wish I knew more about Gene. He has had many careers including a long one in the Air Force as Judge Advocate General (JAG). He also claims the distinction of being one of the two great men born in Lamar MO, the other being Harry S. Truman.

This morning I had to deliver a couple of young men to another part of the valley for a conference. On the way back, I spotted these men out working in the field, backlit by the early morning sun. This is about a mile from my home so upon arriving home, I grabbed my camera and headed back to the field. This is the resulting image - Quintessentially Queen Creek.

Going through some files, I spotted this one from Megan and Taylor's wedding a while ago. Looks like a simple photo to take, right? It was actually difficult. The lighting took a little thinking and the model was a bit of a challenge. Have you ever tried to get a 16 month old, who only wants to play, to stop and look at you on request?

This one is an homage to my young photographer friends. If you insist on shooting backlit, this is how to do it. Sorry if I sound like an old photographer, but that's what I am...

This helicopter landed in the back yard a little after an hour ago. Well, not right in the back yard, but in the retention basin behind the house. It was about 100 feet away. Unfortunately there was an accident at the intersection and this young lady needed to get to the hospital quickly apparently. Those Greenes - gotta love 'em

During the Greene's photo session for their cards, this photo was produced. It begs some close inspection; take a minute and linger over it, I think you may come to like it as much as I do, especially if you know this happy couple. If you don't, you'll want to.

The first one, the black and white version is my favorite. I include a color version for those who have not yet developed an affection for and appreciation of the abstract and interpretive. There are many subtleties here that will be missed if your monitor has been subjectively twiddled and tweaked. If you are bold, call me and I'll come calibrate your monitor. Chocolate-chip cookies gratefully accepted.

Greetings Phellow Photographers,

I'm scheduling a photography fundamentals class for Saturday January 15 and an intermediate class, which is new, for the following Saturday, January 22.

Several people who wanted to attend this last class were unable to because of scheduling conflicts. Also, I know many of you received a new digital SLR camera for Christmas and are wondering just how you'll master that camera. The fundamentals class is a beginner level class. You just need a camera, and a desire to learn. See the flier below for a list of the topics covered in this fundamentals class.

New Intermediate class
Several people have asked me to teach a more advanced course. I'm planning this new intermediate course to do just that.

I'm considering several topics for this class, but will solicit the input of those who register for the class to finalize the course agenda. Currently, these are the topics under consideration. Color management and correction - workflow - image file formats (JPEG vs RAW) - Custom white balance - flash photography topics - modifying light - architectural photography - lighting interiors of buildings - understanding and using a light meter and the camera's internal light meter - panoramic photography (photo stitching) - high dynamic range (HDR) - lens topics - studio lighting - nature photography - natural lighting - focusing issues.

What to do.
If you'd like to take either of these classes (see inline flier from a previous FUNDAMENTALS class date), please send me an email indicating you would like to attend. Click the flier below to enlarge it - making it a little easier to read. Remember, the class is January 15, not the May date on this flier.

The course is for 7 hours on a Saturday. We start at 9AM and finish at 4PM. I'll provide a nice lunch and snacks during the day. We'll talk about concepts and then go out in the yard and practice shooting what we've discussed. We'll view your photos and discover what was done well and where there was room for improvement. The fee is $100 (which includes a DVD and lunch/snacks).

Since the intermediate class is the first time being offered, it will be discounted to only $75 per student.

Serendipitious Teenager Encounter

Call me Lucky. The park was perfect tonight, the sky slightly overcast, the wind calm. The temperature kept us cool and fresh, and the main light (you can call it the sun) was heading towards its scarlet and mauve diurnal destination. The only incident to sadden the heart of the intrepid and child-wise photographer was that he was being outmaneuvered by a recalcitrant and determined two-year old. In a twisted twist of fate, a gaggle of teenagers were lurking around the park. Noting their abundance of exuberant holiday mirth, the photographer petitioned them to stand behind the camera and outwit the two-year old by jumping up and down like a family of monkeys at banana feeding time.

The boys accommodated, the photo was captured. Here are the boys. The photographer thanks them!

Nikki - the girl with the Look

I participated in a photo shoot for a makeup magazine out of Utah back in February of 2007. I never saw the outcome - dang. However, I did meet Nikki at that shoot. She was very professional and always gave me a great look; ever the same thing twice in a row - always working it and refining the look. It's Nikki I remember when I coach girls on how to pose for portraits.

This shot is only slightly edited and not cropped, it's pretty much how it came out of the camera.

Welcome this little girl to the world. She made her grand entrance on Saturday November 27 and here she is, a whole 5 days old. She's a beauty, taking the best from each of her talented and attractive parents. Too soon to tell which one she favors more, but we did discover that she has inherited her father's "Elf ear".
